COUNSELLING & MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY
As a counsellor with extensive community experience, Shelmith understands the importance of creating safe spaces where people can speak without fear of judgement.
Her mental-health advocacy emphasizes that mental-health challenges do not discriminate. Professionals, leaders, teachers, doctors, police officers, parents, humanitarian workers and community leaders can all experience stress, trauma, grief and emotional challenges.
She therefore advocates for a culture where people are encouraged to check on one another and seek help before reaching crisis point.
“YOU ARE NOT ALONE. WE ARE HERE. WE WALK WITH YOU. WE HEAL TOGETHER.”
UNIFORMED OFFICERS' MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS
One of Shelmith's emerging areas of advocacy is the mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of uniformed officers and their families.
She has helped champion a platform bringing together doctors, counselling psychologists, mentors and mental-health advocates to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for officers.
The initiative addresses the question:
“WHO PROTECTS THOSE WHO PROTECT US?”
The platform seeks to support police officers, Administration Police officers, KDF, KWS, Prisons personnel and other frontline officers facing occupational stress, trauma, family pressures, stigma and other psychosocial challenges.
Shelmith believes that supporting the mental wellbeing of officers strengthens not only the individual officer but also their families, institutions and the communities they serve.
GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE ADVOCACY
Shelmith is deeply committed to GBV prevention, survivor support and empowerment.
Her work focuses on creating awareness, challenging harmful social norms, encouraging reporting, strengthening referral pathways and ensuring that survivors are treated with dignity and compassion.
She believes prevention must involve the whole community—including women, men, boys, girls, families, schools, religious leaders, government officers, law enforcement and community leaders.
Her advocacy also emphasizes that survivors should not be defined by what happened to them; with the right support, they can heal, rebuild and reclaim their lives.
HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY
Shelmith's human-rights work is centred on the principle that every human being deserves dignity, equality, safety and justice.
Her advocacy has involved engaging communities and stakeholders on issues affecting vulnerable populations, including women, children, survivors of violence and marginalized groups.
Her experience working with communities has strengthened her belief in partnerships between government, civil society, professionals and citizens in addressing human-rights challenges.
CHILD PROTECTION
Shelmith has been actively involved in advocacy and interventions concerning vulnerable children, including efforts to identify children at risk, support their protection and mobilize appropriate intervention.
Her work emphasizes safeguarding, prevention of exploitation and trafficking, community vigilance and collaboration with relevant authorities and child-protection stakeholders.
HUMANITARIAN & COMMUNITY SERVICE
Shelmith's humanitarian work extends beyond advocacy. She has consistently responded to people experiencing vulnerability and crisis by mobilizing support, connecting individuals to services and standing with communities during difficult moments.
She is particularly passionate about people who are often forgotten—including vulnerable children, survivors of violence, widows, persons with disabilities, marginalized families and people experiencing mental-health challenges.
CIVIC EDUCATION & PEACEBUILDING
Shelmith is also passionate about civic education, responsible citizenship, peacebuilding and community participation.
She believes that communities become stronger when people understand their rights and responsibilities and are given opportunities to participate in decisions affecting their lives.
Her peacebuilding approach promotes dialogue, inclusion, tolerance and collaboration across communities.
