GERTRUDE CHEPKEMOI HSC

Teacher | Human Rights Activist | Philanthropist | Community Leader

Gertrude Chepkemoi HSC is a Kenyan teacher, philanthropist, human rights activist, and community leader whose life and work are defined by resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving humanity.

A trained Bachelor of Education graduate specializing in Special Needs Education, Gertrude believes that education is one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives. Her commitment to continuous learning has seen her pursue a Master of Arts in Gender Studies at Bomet University, strengthening her understanding of gender equality, human rights, social justice, and the challenges facing women, girls, and vulnerable communities.

Gertrude is the founder of Beacon of Hearts, a non-profit, non-partisan, and non-religious charitable organization dedicated to protecting and empowering the African child. Established as an initiative in 2018 and formally registered in 2022, Beacon of Hearts has become a platform through which Gertrude and her team champion education, menstrual health, child rights, environmental conservation, gender-based violence awareness, online child protection, sustainable development, and inclusion.

Through her humanitarian work, Gertrude has contributed to initiatives reaching thousands of girls with menstrual hygiene support, mentoring learners, promoting environmental conservation through tree planting, and creating awareness about the rights and protection of children. She is particularly passionate about ensuring that poverty, menstruation, disability, gender, or difficult family circumstances never become reasons for a child to lose their dignity or opportunity.

Her human rights advocacy focuses on amplifying the voices of people who are often overlooked. She speaks openly about gender-based violence, child protection, women’s rights, menstrual dignity, mental health, reproductive health, equality, and social justice, encouraging communities to confront issues that are frequently hidden or ignored.

Gertrude’s commitment to service has received national recognition. In 2023, she was awarded the Head of State Commendation (HSC) for her contribution to society. She has also received recognition for her humanitarian and environmental efforts and has been nominated for awards celebrating her work in humanitarian service and human rights advocacy.

Her journey has not always been easy. She has experienced personal setbacks and seasons that challenged her education and ambitions. Rather than allowing those experiences to define her, she transformed them into a deeper sense of purpose. Her story is therefore not simply one of achievement—it is a story of resilience, restoration, service, and turning adversity into impact.

As a mother, teacher, philanthropist, and advocate, Gertrude understands the importance of creating safe and supportive communities for the next generation. She continues to use her voice, education, and influence to inspire young people and mobilize communities toward positive change.

Gertrude Chepkemoi HSC represents a generation of African women who are refusing to remain silent in the face of injustice. Through her work, she continues to raise voices for the people in society, defend human dignity, empower the vulnerable, and create opportunities for those who need them most.

Her guiding belief remains:

“Be the heart. Be the change.”

For Gertrude, leadership is not merely about holding a position—it is about showing up, speaking up, serving others, and leaving a positive impact wherever one has the opportunity to make a difference.
